About vibrations

Excessive levels of vibration can have serious adverse effects on human health, particularly for people exposed to them over prolonged periods. EU regulations recognise the risks associated with vibration and establish measures to control exposure and prevent related health problems.

Exposure to vibration can cause a range of health problems.

Hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) is a condition that primarily affects workers who use hand-held vibrating tools, such as impact hammers or chainsaws. The condition can cause numbness and pain in the hands and may even lead to permanent damage. Similarly, whole-body vibration, such as that experienced by operators of heavy machinery or vehicles, can cause back pain and spinal disorders. In addition, prolonged exposure to vibration may also contribute to hearing damage, particularly when combined with occupational noise exposure.

However, the risks associated with vibration exposure are not limited to the workplace. People living near sources of vibration, such as railway lines or motorways, may also be exposed to significant vibration levels. This can contribute to a range of adverse effects, including sleep disturbance, headaches, discomfort, and psychological stress.

It is essential to measure and control vibration levels in all types of environments. This can be achieved through the use of vibration measurement instruments and the implementation of vibration reduction strategies, such as using anti-vibration tools or redesigning machinery to minimise vibration.

Reducing vibration exposure in residential environments can be achieved by implementing measures such as noise barriers and ensuring proper sealing of windows and doors.

Taking appropriate measures to address the risks associated with vibration exposure is essential for reducing exposure levels and protecting human health, in accordance with EU regulations.

Vibration Exposure Limit Values

To protect people from the harmful effects of vibration, Bulgarian legislation establishes permissible vibration limit values.
