B&K Vibro Modernises Vibration Monitoring at Skærbæk Power Station

B&K Vibro

Skærbæk Power Station, a combined heat and power plant in Denmark, is upgrading the vibration monitoring and protection system for its 415 MW steam turbine generator. The existing B&K Vibro VC-4000 system, which has provided protection for the unit for many years, will be replaced by Brüel & Kjær Vibro’s SETPOINT® system.

The new solution will be integrated with a data historian system and will provide both machinery protection and condition monitoring for the steam turbine generator. An important feature is SETPOINT®’s native connection to the AVEVA™ PI System™, allowing vibration data to be viewed alongside other process and operational data. The practical value of such an upgrade is that monitoring is no longer limited to protection against critical values. Modern systems enable earlier fault detection, more in-depth diagnostics, and better maintenance planning. This is particularly important for turbines, generators, pumps, fans, and other machinery whose condition has a direct impact on the reliability of the production process.

According to B&K Vibro, the solution at Skærbæk is scheduled to be commissioned in the summer of 2026, with future expansion of the monitoring system planned to cover other assets, such as pumps and fans. For the Bulgarian market, this example is particularly relevant to power plants, district heating facilities, hydropower plants, industrial enterprises, cement plants, the chemical industry, and other sites with critical rotating machinery. At such facilities, upgrading vibration monitoring can provide better visibility into machine condition, reduce the risk of unplanned shutdowns, and improve technical risk management.

SPECTRI closely follows developments in continuous vibration monitoring and machinery diagnostics, as these technologies are directly linked to the reliability, safety, and effective maintenance of critical industrial assets.
