B&K Vibro Expands Hydropower Condition Monitoring with Generator Air Gap Measurement

Brüel & Kjær Vibro presents a new application of its SETPOINT® monitoring system at Clyde Hydropower Station in New Zealand, which operates four 116 MW hydroelectric generating units. Following several years of successful vibration monitoring, the operator decided to extend the system with generator air gap monitoring functionality.

The upgrade was prompted by signs of deformation in the generator stator frames, resulting in rotor-stator eccentricity and electromagnetic imbalance. While the vibration monitoring system helped detect the problem, additional measurements were required for more detailed diagnostics. Air gap monitoring was initially implemented on Unit 1, with the possibility of extending the solution to the remaining units.

This application demonstrates the importance of comprehensive condition monitoring for hydroelectric generators, combining vibration measurements with additional diagnostic parameters. Such solutions are particularly relevant to hydropower plants, pumped-storage facilities and other energy installations where early detection of mechanical changes is essential for equipment reliability and operational safety.
