The New Burgas City Noise Map

The new noise map for the city of Burgas for 2022 - developed by SPECTRI - has been officially accepted!

We'd like to use this occasion to tell you a bit more about noise mapping, its benefits and uses - and how it's done.

Noise Map

Noise pollution is a growing concern in cities around the world. With the increase of urbanization and transportation, the sound level in cities is constantly on the rise. That's why noise mapping has become an essential tool in modern city planning.

A noise map is a graphical representation of the sound levels in a given area. To create a noise map, data is collected from various sources, including road traffic, airplanes, railways, and industrial sites. The data is then processed, and a map is created that shows the different noise levels in different areas of the city.

Benefits of Noise Maps

The European Union has established guidelines for noise mapping, which are aimed at reducing the exposure of citizens to noise pollution. According to these guidelines, cities are required to conduct noise mapping every five years, and the results must be made available to the public.

The benefits of having a noise map of a city are numerous. First and foremost, it helps to identify areas that are particularly affected by noise pollution. This information can be used to develop noise reduction strategies and policies, such as the creation of noise barriers or the reduction of speed limits in high-noise areas.

Additionally, noise mapping can be used to inform city planning decisions. For example, a noise map can help to determine where to build new residential areas, schools, or hospitals, to avoid areas with high levels of noise pollution.

Moreover, noise mapping can raise public awareness about noise pollution and its effects on health. Exposure to high levels of noise can cause hearing loss, sleep disturbance, and other health problems. By making noise maps available to the public, people can become more aware of the issue and take steps to protect themselves.

Noise mapping is an important tool for modern city planning. It provides valuable information about noise pollution levels in different areas of the city, which can be used to develop noise reduction policies and inform city planning decisions. By following EU guidelines, cities can reduce the exposure of citizens to noise pollution and improve their quality of life.

Here at SPECTRI we are proud of our professional experience nationally and internationally that has allowed us to introduce the first noise map in Bulgaria. We have gone on to create the noise maps for many of Bulgaria's largest cities.
